From TAU Research to a New Approach in Cancer Treatment: Prof. Yona Keisari and Alpha DaRT

Research by Prof. Yona Keisari, Professor Emeritus at the Gray Faculty, helped lead to the development of Alpha DaRT, a technology that delivers alpha radiation directly within solid tumors.

What began as an unexpected connection between physics and cancer research at Tel Aviv University has developed into Alpha DaRT (Diffusing Alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy), a technology designed to deliver alpha radiation directly from within solid tumors.

The technology grew out of research by Prof. Yona Keisari, Professor Emeritus at the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, together with Prof. Itzhak Kelson of Tel Aviv University.

Their work brought together Prof. Kelson’s expertise in physics with Prof. Keisari’s research in cancer and immunology, leading to a new approach in which radioactive sources are inserted directly into the tumor. The alpha-emitting atoms released from these sources diffuse through the tumor, delivering highly localized radiation while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The research eventually led to the establishment of Alpha Tau Medical and the continued clinical development of Alpha DaRT. The technology has since advanced into clinical studies for several types of solid tumors and has received marketing authorization in Japan.

The story of Alpha DaRT and the scientific collaboration behind its development was recently featured by Ynetnews as part of its coverage of Israeli breakthroughs.
